I feel so lucky.I decided I wanted the opportunity to be able to say goodbye to everyone at my site all at once so a few weeks ago I discussed the idea of having a party at my house the day before I was going to leave my community.A small goodbye party.Piet, my host father, was gracious enough to say yes to having a bunch of kids (who like to listen to loud music) as well as all of my Phedisang Project friends and other community members over to the house for the afternoon. The party planning turned into a bit of a fiasco which I won’t go into but in the end it all worked out (somehow it always does…)?My interns came and gave a speech, the girls from Camp GLOW were also there (and helped decorate and serve food), the Phedisang staff helped cook food, the kids who I hang out with from the community all showed up, and many community members came out to say goodbye.Oh, and of course a couple of my PCV friends were there as well.It was a day that I will never forget. The day was filled with food, dancing, laughing and, of course, many tears...
I have a few pictures on some of my friends and family to share.
I grew up in Colorado (no, not Boulder or Denver or anywhere you might recognize) but, yes, Delta. Delta, Colorado, is located between Grand Junction and Montrose at the confluence of the Uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers (population ~5,000). I believe that Delta (okay not the actual town but the people and the experiences) shaped me into the person that I am today. Don't all small towns? Most recently, though, I was living and working in Arizona (my actual birthplace) in the healthcare industry. Oh, and I taught yoga on the side. But, I have been searching for work that is not just a job and this is what brought me to Africa.
This isn't Delta...but it is Colorado. Isn't is beautiful.
I'd like to welcome you.
To what I'm not exactly sure yet but it's soon going to be a place where I will share a little part of me.
I started this blog in 2010 when I moved to South Africa (and joined the Peace Corps). I have lived in Southern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique) since that time. While my posts are somewhat sporadic now I do love sharing a little part of my life with, well, mostly my mom since she is probably my biggest follower but if you happen to stumble upon my little blog...welcome.
Staying connected.
I would love to hear from you. When I was in the Peace Corps I used to list things that I wanted in care packages but that's changed a bit. Now, I would rather just hear from you. So, send me an email with a newsy note, a picture or two and you will make my day. Here's my email...wendydelta@yahoo.com.
